The face of Phnom Penh is changing everyday and tradition is progressively giving way to a certain idea of modernity. Of course, we all have in mind numerous examples of mini architectural disasters and outrageous evictions. On the other hand, this is no black-and-white topic. For instance, we might cry for the disappearance of the “fortune tellers market” besides the Wat Phnom but who would complain about the playground built on the same site? Certainly not the crowds of kids "relaxing" upside down on the swings, running the feet off and climbing endless ropes. Up to now, the closest thing resembling a playground was located within the high-security US embassy compound, and - believe it or not - it was not as successful as this one ;-)
We hope that this first public playground will inspire other initiatives in Phnom Penh. For instance, we might suggest Sisowath blvd, Hun Sen Park or the Olympic Stadium. Kids will love it!
