There is a sub-breed of worker in Phnom Penh, the Café-consultants. These people do not crisscross the globe writing reports from beach huts, oh no, they crisscross the city from Norodom to Toul Tom Poung, in search of the perfect Café. Once found, they encamp there, like an immovable horde, coffee or lime juice at hand.
Wherever the cafe, you will notice that the good seats are gone, because the Café workers have honed in on their favourite wicker chairs. After all wouldn’t you rather have coffee, brownies or other delectable items of breakfast related goodness brought to you, rather than work from home where access to such pastry-inspired delights are somewhat more limited?
This breed is protective of their seats, so try and spot them, and their fiercely guarded corners, next time you grab a coffee around town.
